In Spring 2006 the exhibition “Simo Neri, Recent Works” was on display at the new US Eastern District Federal Courthouse in Brooklyn, New York, designed by Pelli, Clarke, Pelli Architects. The exhibition, which inaugurated the new gallery space in the building’s atrium, was extended into 2007.
By deconstructing and sequentially re-assembling elements from nature, this work offers a fresh perspective to familiar things. The pieces hang vertically in strips that are mounted on canvas, or horizontally on panels mounted on aluminum or sintraboard. At first glance the images may appear as abstract patterns of color and texture, but up close the observer discovers fragments of earth, sky, fire, vegetation, or cascading water.
As a public building, the courthouse receives many visitors, and its atrium gallery became an area of discovery and interest for a diverse population – and a welcome distraction from the preoccupations of the law.
The exhibition ran from April 5 through October 8, 2006 and was extended into 2007.
