11 photographic strips on canvas
98 in x 65 in

This work represents my discovery of the printed photo strip as an element of composition. It is one of my first experiments juxtaposing photographic strips in order to “paint” quickly and at a large scale. Each strip corresponds to a full roll of 35mm film, printed in the original sequence, from each of 11 rolls of negatives. Rushing white water from a small stream, and the deconstructed trunk of an ancient chestnut tree frame a chaotic center comprised of winter branches against an ominous sky. The symbolic significance of the gushing water and the graphic sexual gash in the tree’s trunk, also evoke origins.
