These FIVE TREES are from a pre-digital series of ten “trees” that constitute one of my first experiments in perspective flattening through the sequential recomposition of deconstructed details. 25 original, continuous photo strips in groups of five, each representing a different tree from a different part of the world. Each continuous photo strip represents the entire original 36-exposure roll of 35mm film, composed in-camera, and printed in “no-cut” mode on a pre-digital archival photo printer. Each photo strip was then mounted between PH-neutral canvas on back and UV-protective lamination on front. Each strip represents a small journey, from the ground up. The juxtaposition of five photo strips creates a rhythmic pattern, unique in color and texture. As I look at the five trees together, I am struck by their diversity, their individuality, the unique story each tree tells. Mine is an effort to preserve each of these stories for future generations.
