“Watersleeves” juxtaposes the turbulent water of Japanese mountain streams with the peaceful water of the Mediterranean Sea and the golden evening water of the Seine river. Always looking for a rhythmic balance in movement, I photograph trees, skies, water, and earth from different locations; I then multiply, mix, and compose these images in logical sequences or as chance encounters. In 2004 this screen was installed in the austere architecture of the Ministry of Finance and Economics in Paris, where I was invited to exhibit my work. By installing this screen in the stairwell of an industrial work/live building in San Francisco – typically a place of hurried passage – I am challenging the notion of getting somewhere fast with an invitation to stop a moment to take in the infinitely diverse nature of moving water.
