Shelter 2021

Acrylic paint rendering over digital photographic giclee print on stretched canvas
30 in x 30 in, edition of 1

’Shelter’ is part of a diptych, ‘Shelter in Place’. The dream-like rendering of a deconstructed home, nestled within the elemental house icon, floats over a sea of colorful urban tent communities, offering the imagination the mirage of a real home. After a full year of my own “sheltering in place”, my attention turned to the houseless-ness that seems prevalent in many urban environments. The incongruity of the mandate to shelter in place coupled with the scarcity of available shelters strikes me as absurd. How can so many people hope to protect themselves and others without access to the basic requirements of a “shelter”?
